What to see in Alatri: a guide to the village

Acropolis, cyclopean walls and medieval lanes: a walking itinerary from our apartment.

Glimpse of Alatri’s old town

Alatri is one of the most fascinating towns in the Ciociaria.

Its heart is the Acropolis, enclosed by imposing megalithic (cyclopean) walls among the best preserved in the world. Within the Acropolis stands the Co-Cathedral of San Paolo, where the relic of the Eucharistic Miracle of the Incarnate Host is kept — recognised by the Catholic Church as one of the four major Eucharistic miracles.

In the old town, just steps from Le Caraffe, the main square with the splendid Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Fontana Pia is well worth a visit, along with the Church of San Francesco — home to the precious relic of the Holy Mantle of Saint Francis of Assisi — and the medieval lanes.
